Full Description

A building dating from the 16th century, which was restored and added to in 1959, and now in use as a public house. It has timber box framing with large arch braces and plastered nogging and was constructed of brick. It has a 20th century rockfaced stone underbuild and plain tile roofs. The building is three storeys high with four bays. The interior has jowled posts with struts, stud partition walls and arch braced crown post roofs with collars and spine beams. Much of the timber structure has been renewed. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}{2} Although now in use as a public house, the building is thought to have originally functioned as a merchant's house for most of its life. The proposed widening of the nearby Broadgate road in the 1950s prompted the subsequent demolition of the original Green Dragon pub, located adjacent to the current structure (see MLI126101). Preliminary investigations conducted in the early 1950s had found the timber frame of this much older structure to be very sound, although previous commercial use of the property had destroyed much of the original configuration of the ground floor. Extensive repairs and alterations were conducted to the building in the later 1950s, with the majority of the ground floor walls being renewed in stone, and the upper floor plasterwork being removed, exposing the timberwork here. The licence for the former Green Dragon pub was transferred to this building prior to the former's demolition, with the Green Dragon re-opening here in 1957. {1}{2}
