Full Description
Grade I listed house, originally with a first floor hall and shops below, now a restaurant and salon, dating from about 1170 and altered in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is dressed stone and brick, with a pantile roof and two 18th century brick gable stacks. To the left is a wooden shopfront dating from the early 19th century. The interior has a 12th century chamfered doorway with imposts in the rear wall. For the full description of this listed building please refer to the National Heritage List for England. {1}
The building features large wooden lintels, spanning the arcaded shop fronts at street level. The lintels are thought to have replaced the original segmented arches at the front of the house, possibly following structural failure of the property. This phase of rebuilding was thought to have occurred in the 13th or 14th century, based on stylistic grounds. Several samples were taken from the lintels as part of a programme of tree-ring analysis, conducted in 1994, although only one sample proved suitable for dating. This sample gave a felling date for the timber as being between 1321 and 1352, which would indicate a likely early to mid 14th date for the alteration works, and corresponding with the previous stylistic interpretation. {2}
