Full Description

A cottage orné dating from about 1800, which underwent alterations in the 20th century. The structure is thickly rendered and has some colourwashed brick dressings. The pitched roof is of thatch covered with corrugated iron, with overhanging eaves to the east supported on four wooden posts, and two tall, angled ridge stacks. The building is single-storey with garret, and has a three-bay east front with central doorway with pointed head, hood mould and plank door. The doorway is flanked by single windows, both with pointed heads, hood mould, Y tracery and leaded lights. The north front has a single small, two-light casement, with two-light sliding sash in garret. The south front has a doorway to left with plank door and small lancet to right with Y tracery, and a single two-light casement in the garret. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate entry in the National Heritage List for England. {1}{2} The Cottage is a traditional mud and stud construction, under a pitched thatched roof. A central hearth heated a room to each side, with a further pair of rooms in the half-storey above. There is a rustic pole veranda at the front (though the poles have been replaced with telegraph poles), and there is some evidence for there once having been another veranda at the rear, now infilled. There is significant cartographical evidence for the building once having been two properties, suggesting the central staircase may be a later addition. The building appears to have been united into a single property by the 1930s, and is depicted as such on the 1946 Ordnance Survey map. This change may be contemporary to the removal of infill in the front veranda and reinstating of the cottage orné style of the front elevation, as well as the addition of the concrete render and corrugated roof over the original thatch. Despite the history of alteration, the building still retains some 19th century (and probably original) fixtures and fittings, including plank doors with cast iron penny hinges, a 19th century cast iron range, and original sash windows in the dormer with diamond leaded glass. The exterior gothic-style door also still has an original cast iron long Suffolk latch. {3}{4}
