Full Description

An off-shore fort dating from 1915 to 1918 which underwent later alterations and additions. It was constructed of reinforced concrete and brick and was clad with riveted steel armour plating. It has a timber and steel jetty. The fort is circular on plan with a hexagonal base and balcony at sea level and plain railings to the balcony and jetty. To the north-east is a pair of gun emplacements. Haile Sand Fort, with its larger companion Fort on Bull Sand (Humberside) to the north-east, guarded the approaches to the Humber with gun batteries and an anti-submarine net of steel mesh stretched between them across the mouth of the estuary (now removed). Both forts were constantly manned during both the First World War and the Second World War, and were often under attack from aircraft and submarine. The army left in 1956, but the Forts were still manned until the early 1960's, when both were sold to the Humber Conservancy Board. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} The fort was used to house a coastal battery during the Second World War. {2}{3}
