Full Description

A barn dating from the 17th century, which is timber-framed and underbuilt in brick. It has a corrugated iron hipped roof which replaced the original thatch. Single storey and of five structural bays. The main stud posts are visible externally, on padstones. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} The barn at Village Farm was the subject of historical research in November 2015, when an assessment of its significance was produced to inform proposed alterations and change of use. The building is single-storey and is of 5 bays. The building does not appear on any historical maps until 1887, and is thought to have been moved to its current position from an unknown location at some point prior to this, in the second half of the 19th century. The building was in a very poor condition until repair and alterations works were commenced in 2007. The repair works were hampered by damage caused to the building by an earthquake in 2008, with works continuing for several years after this. These works repaired the original timber frame, but completely replaced all of the extant 19th century external cladding, and added new timber framing as supports. {2}
