Building record MLI92991 - Wyham House, Wyham cum Cadeby
Summary
A house containing 14th century fabric.
Type and Period (2)
Protected Status/Designation
Full Description
A house which preserves some 14th century medieval fabric, although it underwent extensive early 17th and early 19th century remodelling, along with 19th and 20th century additions and alterations. It was constructed of chalk block, with ironstone and red brick dressings, and has a hipped slate roof and two wall stacks. The medieval fabric may be part of a grange belonging to the Gilbertine Priory of North Ormsby. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}
Both Pevsner and the listed building description mention a grange of North Ormsby Priory here. There is no documentary evidence in Dugdale's Monasticon Anglicarum for North Ormsby owning any land in Wyham and so this suggestion appears to be based only on the proximity of North Ormsby and that the Recctory is called Wyham Grange on nineteenth century maps. The existence of a medieval grange must be regarded as somewhat circumstantial. {2}
