Full Description

A terrace of four houses arranged as a palace front dating from the early 18th century which was constructed of red brick and has a pantile roof with a part tumbled brick coped gable and a single central ridge stack. For the former description and legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} This building is an early 18th century terrace of four houses that retains, largely intact, both its polite north façade and its more utilitarian south elevation. The two storey terrace is rectangular in plan, built of red brick laid in Flemish bond, with a tumbled brick gable to the west. The steeply pitched roof is pantiled and has three ridge chimney stacks. The north elevation, facing onto Spain Lane, is an elegant and impressive classical elevation. It has ten bays, the central four bays slightly advanced under an open pediment with a moulded fascia and modillion eaves cornice. The interiors of the four houses have been modernised to a greater or lesser extent in the 20th century and they retain varying amounts of original detail. The most complete is no.9, which also retains contemporary features in its polite front room. The later fireplace is flanked by arched niches with moulded pilasters above a shelf and cupboards. The walls are lined with fielded dado panelling and the main doors have six, fielded panels. There are also shutters to both ground and first floor front rooms. No.5 also contains extensive joinery detail, including apparently recycled items. One of the main features in all houses is the built-in cupboards, some with six and others with four-panelled doors. The main attic rooms contain an arched niche, variously altered. The roof has coupled common rafters with purlins clasped by collars.
