Full Description

A shop and offices dating from 1668, although it may have earlier remains in the cellar. The building underwent alterations in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. It was constructed of red brick with stucco bands dressings and has a stone plinth, a hipped slate roof and two wall stacks. For the former description and legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} Known as Pilgrim House, 6-8 South Street is on, or immediately to the north of, the site of the Dominican Friary (PRN10031). It is a mid 17th-century building and high up on the second floor of the rear elevation are two plaques, one with the initials TTE and the date 1662, and the second with a coat of arms. The building is rectangular, of three storeys, built of red brick with stucco dressings, a stone plinth and a hipped, slate-covered roof. The building seems to have been remodelled externally in the 18th century, with new sash windows added, and again in the 19th century when the front seems to have been substantially rebuilt. It has a 19th-century-style shop front. The extensive cellars are largely constructed of brick, and contain substantial chamfered beams, some with run-out stops and some with signs of reuse. These beams probably came from an earlier building, one perhaps related to the Dominican Friary which stood on this site. The interior on all floors has been extensively remodelled in the 20th century. However, elements of historic detail survive, most notably an 18th century staircase. Much of the original roof structure survives, although augmented by more modern work. For the full description of this listed building please refer to the National Heritage List for England. {2}{3} The building was the location of the London Tavern between 1833 and 1859. {4}
