Full Description

A house now shop dating from the early 18th century which underwent alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. It was constructed of stucco and red brick with stucco dressings and quoins and has a Welsh slate roof with two Gault brick gable stacks. For the former description and legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} The building is built in stucco and red brick with stucco dressings and a Welsh slate roof. It has an L-shaped plan with a rear wing extending the full length of the plot. The building is part of a terrace of houses with shop fronts facing the Market Place which range in date from the 18th to 19th century. The building has three storeys and a 20th century shop front. It was most likely built (or rebuilt in the early 19th century) as a house with commercial premises. The earliest part of 43-44 Market Place to survive is the red-brick, rear wing which dates to the early 18th century and has a tumbled gable and brick band. Internally the building has been substantially remodelled and does not appear to retain any joinery or decorative elements from any earlier phase. The building was altered in the 20th century to form a restaurant and kitchen on the ground floor, a shop and bar on the first floor, and domestic accommodation on the second floor. For the full description of this listed building please refer to the National Heritage List for England. {2}{3}
