Full Description

PRN 47288 Red brick grammar school building, now a hall, built in 1778 and altered in 1855 and the 20th century. The grammar school was founded c. 1329 and re-founded as the Free Grammar School of Queen Elizabeth in 1571 by Lord Clinton. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}{2} White's 1856 Trade Directory states that the school taught 30 to 40 boys subjects incluing reading, writing, arithmetic 'and the other branches of an English education'. By 1872, the estimated number of pupils was 40-50. {3}{4} The building now houses a restaurant/coffee shop.
