Full Description

PRN 70624 A total of 785 pieces of struck or modified flint were recovered during sieving of an in situ prehistoric land surface of sand discovered during excavation at the site of a new pond. All but two of these flints were of later Mesolithic date and they include microliths and end scrapers. Some flints were burnt, suggesting the presence of hearths. Most of the flints have very fresh edges and had not been displaced from their original depositional context. They appear to represent some form of temporary, seasonal occupation such as a hunting camp, possibly utilising the waterside resources of the shore of the Brayford Pool. There appears to have been some flint-working carried out at the site, however it does not appear to have been a specialised flint-working site. The site may have been returned to over several seasons or years. {1}{2}
