Full Description

PRN 47200 The house at 31 East Street was built in 1852-3 by James Fowler of Louth, a reknowned local church architect, and is one of his earlier works. It was in use as a vicarage until 1990 when it passed into private hands. The house is of red brick construction with limestone window surrounds and yellow brick diapering on all of the original exterior elevations. It has a gabled pitched slate roof with decorative crested ridge tiles. Some of the windows are later additions and interrupt the pattern of the brick diapering. Each gable is inset with a decorative stone plaque: South elevation, eastern gable - shield with the coat of arms of Bishop of Lincoln. East elevation, central bay - shield with initials 'G.J.' (George Jeans, vicar in 1853) West elevation, original gable - sheild with date 1853. The south elevation door opening bears an inscription with the initials 'G.J.' on the left of the door, and 'J.K.' (John Kaye, Bishop of Lincoln 1827-53) on the right. The north and west ends of the building shows considerable modern alteration, with the original parish room being demolished and modern single storey extensions added. To the west of the house is an original red brick walled courtyard with original gate-piers, the opening of which is now blocked and replaced by a narrower single doorway. The interior maintains its original main entrance hall and staircase, and one of its limestone fireplaces, but the rest of the house has undergone significant modern alteration. The vicarage is considered to be of townscape interest by the Conservation Area Appraisal. {1}{2}{3}{4}
