Full Description

PRN 65335 The cemetery was opened in 1856, following an Act of Parliament which prevented the use of other burial grounds within the town. It was initially laid out in a formal manner with evergreen trees and shrubs, as was considered proper. However, this was not maintained, the trees and shrubs died and all the cemetery looked shabby. When new trees were planted, they were deciduous trees planted at random, not in keeping with the original layout. {1} The lodge at the cemetery entrance is of Cottage Orne style rather than the more usual Gothic. {2}
