Full Description

This is the record for the northern industrial quarter of the post-medieval settlement of Gainsborough. The quarter is defined by Gladstone Street and Spital Terrace to the south, the railway to the east, North Marsh Road and the cemetary to the north and Burns Street, George Street and Wilson Street to the west. For further information on the town of Gainsborough, see the records for the pre-industrial core (PRN 55528) and for the general settlement (PRN 55527). This area of the town consists primarily of terraced workers housing in grid-iron street patterns, as does the area to the south (see PRN 55530). However, 19th and early 20th century maps show that most of this area remained open land until at least the early 20th century although some streets are earlier. This area also contains some larger, early-mid 19th century houses (some are listed - see individual records) which probably represent suburban villas swallowed up within the later growth. {1}{2}{3} Evaluation trenches were excavated by Pre-Construct Archaeological Services in October 2009 prior to an extension at The Plough Inn, Church Street, Gainsborough [PRN 55529a - SK 8144 9015]. Post holes, pits and linear features dating from the post-medieval to early modern periods were revealed. {4}{5} Historic building recording of an outbuilding at 1 Morton Terrace was conducted in March 2012, prior to its proposed demolition (PRN 55529b - SK 8138 9036). The building dates from the late nineteenth century and is contemporary with 1 Morton Terrace. The buildings are not present on the 1885 town map of Gainsborough but are present by 1905. This two storey building is built of red brick with a pantile gabled roof with an end stack. The surviving windows are Yorkshire sashes under segmental heads. It was probably originally for housing a horse and a trap with associated tack. One ground floor room would have had a small stove or fireplace as there is a flue and chimney. The upper storey, a single long room, was most likely used for the storage of bedding and feed, and there is a pitch-hole at the south end facing Bayard Lane. {6}{7} An evaluation was conducted in 2012, at the site of the Court House, Roseway, prior to proposed redevelopment (PRN 55529c - SK 8151 9005). Three trial trenches were excavated, revealing the remains of several former terraced brick buildings fronting onto Church Street, some with internal tiled floor surface and internal foundations, and a number of external yard surfaces and outbuildings. The structures correlate well with those depicted on historic mapping of the site, and are thought to be the remains of 19th and 20th century housing and yards, demolished prior to the construction of the Magistrates Court. No evidence of earlier features were recorded, though excavation did not reach beyond these post-medieval/early modern structures. {8}{9} Remains of the former Co-Op dairy building were recorded in July 2015, during archaeological monitoring of groundworks for residential development on land at Northolme, Gainsborough (PRN 55529d - SK 8166 9043). The remains were identified as occasional fragments of brick walling and foundations of the main dairy building and a number of associated former structures, and traces of former drains and services. The dairy buildings are first depicted on the 2nd edition 25 inch Ordnance Survey County Series map, suggesting they date to the last years of the late 19th century. No features or artefacts pre-dating the dairy buildings were encountered during the monitoring. {10}{11}{12}
