Full Description

Traces of ridge and furrow were recorded in this location in October 2007, during archaeological monitoring of new development at Witham Hall School. Six former plough furrows were recorded during the works, all on the same roughly north-east to south-west alignment. An assemblage of late medieval and early post-medieval pottery was recovered from the fills of the furrows and the overlying topsoil, along with a quantity of more recent material. The pottery was thought to have derived from manuring scatters, indicating a long period of agricultural use of this land, before its inclusion in the parkland of Witham Hall by the end of the 18th century. The assemblage was comprised of sherds from a wide variety of vessel forms and fabrics, including pieces of Black-glazed ware, Bourne ware and Staffordshire wares, amongst others. {1}{2}
