Full Description

A number of large and deep pits of medieval date were encountered during trial trenching in October 2005. It is thought that these pits may have been excavated for limestone quarrying, and were later used as rubbish pits. Pottery, animal bone and iron slag was found in the pit fills, and a near perfect pair of metal tweezers was also recovered from one pit along with a piece of copper strip. {1}{2} The truncated remains of four pottery kilns were revealed during a watching brief in March 2007. Kiln 1 was lined with fired clay and had been previously excavated in 1969. Kiln 2 had a fired-clay-lined wall into which were impressed waster pottery sherds, it was producing pottery in the late eleventh century. Stamford ware pottery and wasters were recovered from Kilns 2, 3 and 4. The pottery from kilns 3 and 4 was identical to that found in 1969 in kiln 1 suggesting pottery production in the mid to late twelfth century. A wicker-lined pit was also revealed which contained a cresset lamp probably dating from the late Saxon period. The pit was probably a storage pit containing working clay. Two post holes, probably associated with the pit were also found along with another pit which was not excavated. Tap slag debris was found from the surface of the pit which was probably derived from a Saxon iron smelting furnace. {3}{4}
