Full Description

PRN 65035 A trackway running from near Haceby villa (PRN 60730) to King Street (PRN 33097) has been plotted from aerial photographs. {1} During archaeological evaluation to the north of the A52 near Haceby villa, a stone surface with a slight camber was recorded in Trench 12. It contained 2nd to 4th century pottery and was thought to be a north-east/south-west aligned road. Geophysical survey demonstrated that this surface lay between two north-east/south-west aligned parallel linear features, thought to be ditches flanking a Roman road plotted as a cropmark. This is thought to represent a road connecting Haceby villa with King Street. Geophysical survey showed the feature continuing beyond the A52 in a north-easterly direction, possibly leading onto an existing track known as 'Green Lane', and then towards Mareham Lane Roman road (PRN 60813). {2}{3}{4} It is suggested that this road stretched from Grantham to Donington, following the parish boundaries for much of its length. {5} It has been noted that a possible cropmark trackway (PRN62698) near Scott Willoughby is on the same alignment as this road and may be a continuation of it. {6}
