Full Description

Sutton Bridge Camp was a Prisoner of War camp during the Second World War. In the official government numbering it was camp 254 and referred to as Sutton Bridge Camp, Holbeach. It is recorded as a German working camp and was located on a disused RAF airfield. The site has now been largely demolished. {1} Sutton Bridge Camp was a Prisoner of War camp used during the Second World War. Contrary to information given in Source 1, Sutton Bridge Camp was not on the site of the airfield but was located to the north of Sutton Bridge, on the west side of the river, on part of the former Sutton Bridge Dock site. The camp is depicted on the 6" Ordnance Survey map of the early 1950's. Local residents state that German prisoners were held in buildings near the former timber yard, whilst Italian prisoners were held in buildings at the northern end of the site. The camp was also said to have had earlier origins, being used to house German prisoners during the First World War. {2}{3}
