Full Description

PRN 36831 A site visit was undertaken at Witham Hall Preparatory School (PRN 36830). The site of the cross is marked by a mound (PRN 36831), lying southwest of the school and within landscape gardens of the original Hall. According to local tradition, the mound was thought to be a viewing platform for the ladies of the hall. The mound and a cross is shown on the Ordnance Survey County Series map of 1905. In addition, a village publication concluded that the mound was the remains of a post-mill mound. The mound is quite substantial, well preserved (apart from four substantial trees) and under pasture.{1}
