Full Description

A number of linear and discrete magnetic anomalies were recorded in this location in November 2006, during magnetometry survey of land for a proposed new business park at Gwash Valley, Stamford. The anomalies were thought to represent the remains of former ditches and pits of uncertain date. {1} Subsequent trial trenching, conducted in January 2007, confirmed the presence of a number of linear features, with a particular concentration in the south-east corner of the site. The majority of these features were thought to represent the remains of former drainage ditches, moving water into the adjacent River Gwash. A small assemblage of pottery was recovered from the fills of several of the ditches, with all but one fragment being from a variety of 2nd to 4th century Nene Valley vessels. The one exception was a very small fragment of Transitional/late Iron Age pottery which appears to have been residual. Fragments of Romano-British ceramic building material were also recovered, including possible roof and hypocaust tile, suggesting the presence of a Roman building somewhere in the vicinity. Analysis of environmental samples taken from the ditch fills recorded a very low density of charred plant remains and grains, suggesting the site was well away from any centre of habitation or arable cultivation. A small assemblage of animal bone recovered from the ditches did not include evidence for craft working or burning, which would support the idea that the ditches were away from any major settlement area. The investigation also recorded a number of probable Romano-British earthworks, including a bank and terraces, towards the south-east of the site. It was thought that the earthworks may represent the remains of possible flood defences in this area. {2}{3} A single redeposited sherd of Roman pottery was recovered in this location in October 2015, during trial trenching on land off Uffington Road, Newstead. The sherd was a heavily abraded basal fragment from a Nene Valley Colour Coated vessel, dating from the late 3rd to 4th century. {4}{5}
