Full Description

An extensive complex of cropmark enclosures is visible in the fields immediately to the east of the Car Dyke on an aerial photograph. A cropmark trackway is also visible which appears to overlie the enclosures. It seems likely that the cropmarks may represent Romano-British settlement and/or field systems. They may be related to similar enclosures visible in a field to the west of the Car Dyke (PRN 60022) and it also seems likely that the cropmarks extend beyond what is visible on the aerial photograph (and what is shown on Mapinfo). {1} Large surface scatters of Romano-British pottery including Samian, colour coated ware and amphora sherds have been seen in several of these fields (at TF 152 393, TF 154 397 and TF 153 396). This strengthens the interpretation of the cropmarks as representing Romano-British settlement in the area, and suggests that at least some of that settlement may have been relatively high status. Pottery scatters have also been seen nearby to the west of the Car Dyke (see PRNs 64546 and 64547). {2} Some Romano-British pottery along with a small amount of Iron Age pottery was found at TF 151 392. More Romano-British pottery was found at TF 152 391 and TF 152 390. A dark burnt area and some undressed stone were also seen at TF 152 390. Large quantities of Romano-British pottery were also seen at TF 152 395. {3}
