Full Description
Site of a former meeting house and burial ground of the Society of Friends, at Church End, Gedney. The building was demolished in about 1981, and modern bungalows now occupy the site. The site was bequeathed in 1698 by Stephen Willoughby, and comprised 'one cottage and one acre of land'. The original building appears to have fallen into a state of disrepair by 1828, when a member of the Society of Friends deplored 'the low and slipped state of our little church there'. Extensive alteratiosn were made to the building in 1846-7, when the roof was raised and a dwelling was added to the eastern end. The walls were of brick and the roof was of slate. The south wall had openings in the older, lower walling only, which comprised two doorways and a window located between near the western end, and three windows to the right all with segmental-arched heads. The northern wall faced the road and had the remains of a central window to the lower part, with a range of four sash windows in the heightened part above. The western gable was surmounted by a substantial chimney stack, and had a wide, round-arched doorway with wooden pedimented surround, and two wide round-arched upper windows above, all dating from the 19th century. The interior had a gallery at the western end with shutters above and below, and the outline of the stand was visible at the eastern end. In the burial ground to the south were three large ledger stones, one thought to date to 1847, with the others being later in date. {1}{2}
