Full Description

PRN 70558 The foundation date of this church is unknown, although it seems unlikely to have been a particularly early foundation. The extent and boundaries of the churchyard are also unknown. The church was given to the Cathedral in 1115-6 by Henry I and it then became a prebendary church. It may have been the home of the Guild of St Edmund of Pontigny in 1276, although this is not certain. The parish does not appear to have been large or wealthy and, like St Mary Crackpool nearby, it must have suffered during the decline of the cloth trade from the 13th century onwards. It had fewer than 10 parishioners by 1428. It was eventually amalgamated with St Peter at Arches (not St Martin, as has also been suggested), although it is not known when this happened or what happened to the church and churchyard following this. It is thought that references to the church of All Hallows probably refer to this church (although it has also been suggested that they refer to St John the Poor - see PRN 70549) and if this is the case there is a reference to the sale of the church fabric in 1533, suggesting its demolition around this time. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}
