Full Description

PRN 70556 The foundation date of this church (which is also referred to as 'below Hill' or 'Clewmarket') is uncertain and is probably related to the foundation of the Clewmarket which it appears to have a close association with. Unfortunately the foundation date of the market is also unknown. The parish was greatly reduced in size by the development of Franciscan Friary in the 13th century and it had less than 10 inhabitants by 1428. It was liquidated by the City Council in 1535, although the chancel was excepted from the sale. The rest of the church appears to have been destroyed at this time and the stone (or the profits from its sale?) was used for "setting and dyking" on the commons between the city and Burton. It is unclear what happened to the chancel and the churchyard at this point. {1}{2}{3}{4}
