Full Description
The foundation date of this church is unknown, but it does not appear to have been an early foundation. It is first mentioned in the documentary sources in 1147-8. It appears to have been a small and relatively minor parish, and it had less than 10 inhabitants by 1428. It is not mentioned again after this and it appears to have gone out of use at some time in the later 15th century, possibly being amalgamated with St Michael's before 1461 (although it belonged to St Swithin's by the 17th century). It was the home of the Guild of St George, founded 1377. It is not certain what happened to the church and churchyard after went out of use. It has been suggested that the church may have remained in use as a chapel, possibly for the use of the guild or as a chapel of ease, but there is no direct evidence for this.
There are references to a church of St Gregory in the 19th century, but it appears that this is probably a misreading of references to St George. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}
