Full Description

PRN 70552 The date and circumstances of the foundation of this church are uncertain. It may have been associated with the corn market held in this area. The dedication is to a Northumbrian saint and may suggest a pre-Conquest foundation, or even one during an earlier period of Northumbrian influence. It is first referred to in the documentary sources in 1170-80. The parish appears to have been relatively prosperous, as shown by the large number of medieval stone houses in the vicinity (including Jews House). The Guild of 'St Mary who looks over little St Hugh' may have been founded here or at St Andrew under Palace (PRN 70550), or both, in 1363. The parish had more than 10 inhabitants in 1428, and was still attracting wealthy patronage in the later 15th century. However, it was one of the many churches closed during the Act of Union of Parishes in 1549. Presumably it was demolished at this point, although there is no record of the sale of the church fabric. The churchyard continued in use as an overspill graveyard until the 1850s. {1}{2}{3}
