Full Description
PRN 70550
This church (which is also known as St Andrew under Hill) is poorly documented and in a peripheral location. Its foundation date is unknown although it is first documented in 1155-8. Its location is also uncertain. It was united with St Mary le Wigford in 1263, after which it continued as a chapel of ease to St Mary. It is uncertain whether the churchyard continued in use after this time. The Guild of 'St Mary who stands over little St Hugh' was founded here or at St Cuthbert's (PRN 70552), or both, in 1363 and therefore the chapel may have contained subsidiary altars for the use of the guild. There were fewer than 10 parishioners in 1428, and this is the last documentary reference to the church which disappears after this time. {1}{2}{3}
One author mentions an Anchorite cell attached to this church. However, this appears to have been a confused reading of documentary sources referring to the church of St Andrew at Wigford (PRN 70535).{1}{3}
