Full Description

PRN 70542 St Margaret's is a little known church situated within the Lower Wigford market area. Its foundation date is unknown, although there is no reason to think that it was an early foundation and it may post date the establishment of the market or even post date the creation of the Sincil Dyke in the late 11th century. The church was patronised by the Blyton family, who founded a chantry there in the 14th century, and appears to have been closely connected with their estate - it may even have been founded as the estate's chapel. It had more than 10 parishioners in 1428 and it survived the Reformation but it was liquidated by the City Council in 1550-1 for their profit, although it is not clear whether the building was demolished at this time or re-used for secular purposes. The site was converted into an orchard. {1}{2} The church is first mentioned in documentary sources in 1147-8. {4} Timber and stone from the church was given or sold to Mr York for building work in the city of suburbs in 1550 and the church was taken down and sold "for the use of the common chamber" in 1551. {3}{4} Burials have been discovered during street-side works in the area. {1}
