Full Description
PRN 70535
This church is situated within the Upper Wigford suburb, therefore is likely to have been a relatively early foundation. It is also said to be one of the Precentor's churches. It was patronised by the Sutton family of merchants who founded a chantry there in c. 1414. The church also contained a chapel to St Anne, and a recluse called Isabella was resident in the church at the end of the 14th century. The associated parish had less than 10 inhabitants by 1428 but it nevertheless continued to receive patronage from wealthy citizens and appears to have been more of a conglomeration of private chapels rather than a standard parish church by the time of the Reformation. An appeal was made against the demolition of the church in 1551 by the Suttons on the grounds that it was founded and maintained as a private chapel not a parish church. However, this appeal was overturned and the church was demolished and its assets sold off like most others in Lincoln at this time, although it was offered for sale to the Suttons first in 1552 which they appear to have declined. {1}{2}{4}
A complete inventory of the church and its fittings was made in 1551 prior to its sale and destruction. In total it was valued at £82 16s 9d, although it was offered for sale to the Suttons a year later for only £53. {4}{5}
It is first mentioned in documentary sources c. 1265. {3}
