Full Description

PRN 70533 There is some uncertainty about the date of foundation of this church. It has been suggested that it may be a relatively early foundation due to its location within the suburb of Lower Wigford and at the town end of a great market street, and also due to the fact that the church gave its name to a Cathedral prebend. {1}{2} However, the greatly reduced size of the associated parish, which is shared with St Michael Wigford, and its location on only one side of the High Street could suggest that it is a late foundation. {2} It is first mentioned in documentary sources in 1291, and is also refered to as Holy Rood. {3} This church stood on the west side of the High Street, immediately to the south of the Great Gowt and adjacent to the bridge. The Guild of St Sepulchre was founded here c. 1376. Little else is known of this church's history before the Reformation. The bells were removed in 1548, presumably for sale, indicating that the church was redundant by this time. In 1551 the City Corporation leased the church building and churchyard to the Clothworkers (or Clothiers) guild for 20 years. The Clothworkers pulled down the steeple, shut up the west end of the building and installed their equipment in the rest of the church and the churchyard. By 1558 this enterprise had failed. {2}{4}{5}
