Full Description

PRN 70532 It is suggested that this church was founded on reclaimed land recovered when the Fossdyke was cleaned out by Henry I c. 1124. The churchyard was dug up for brick earth at the beginning of the 18th century, when stone coffins were found which were converted into horse troughs. {1} It is also suggested that this church served the bishop's manorial enclosure at Willingthorpe, giving it a rural origin rather than urban. At some point this manor was swallowed up by the expansion of Newland suburb. By 1263 the parish had been united with St Mary le Wigford and the church may have been demolished then. Alternatively, it may have been demoted to a chapel-of-ease. Either way, it is uncertain how long the building survived for. {2} The church is first mentioned in documentary sources in 1163. {3}
