Full Description

PRN 55376 Human remains were discovered beneath the floor of one of the Marshall's Britannia Works buildings during re-development of the site. The remains consist of incomplete long bones, ribs and skull fragments from several individuals ranging in age from approximately 2 to 35 years old. A fragment of frontal bone from a juvenile skull has had the upper cranial vault removed post mortem, in order to remove the brain. One of the long bones also showed signs of having been part of an articulated skeleton for teaching. The human remains may have been hospital or anatomists' waste, or from a teaching collection. All are thought to pre-date the construction of Marshall's offices in 1882, and probably originate from the burial ground of a church that used to stand directly opposite the Marshall's site. {1}{2}
