Full Description

PRN 64212 A fragment only (the tower) of a ruined country house in the Tudor taste, built in 1835 on the site of the Gilbertine priory, and designed by H.E. Kendall. Several other features associated with the house survive including the stable block (PRN 64304), a walled garden (PRN 64303) and the gates and screen walls to the south front of the house, built 1835 and also designed by H.E. Kendall. This house was built on the site of an older house built in the 1780s, and may re-use elements of this building. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} The house was owned by the Finch Hatton family until 1921 when it was advertised for sale. The advertisement stated that the house comprised "four reception rooms, billiard room, business room, some thirty bedrooms, four bath rooms and suitable domestic offices". It was described as "melancholy always" and was believed to be haunted. It was demolished in 1927 after no one could afford to buy it. {2} Pevsner mentions a bridge (PRN 62544) and a lodge (PRN 64238) associated with this site. {3} Aerial photographs show the layout and state of the buildings, including the remains of the house, and the walled garden in 1950 and 1976. {4} Haverholme Priory, Ewerby and Evedon. Partially extant 19th century farmstead. Regular courtyard of F plan. There has been a partial loss (less than 50%) of traditional buildings. Isolated location. {5}
