Full Description

PRN 64196 A series of boreholes were sunk to determine the strata beneath existing buildings at Navigation Wharf, Sleaford. Two locations were chosen to remove intact undisturbed cores, taken for potential post-excavation study of the palaeo-environmental history of the site. Both sequences had a relatively high potential for analysing the local vegetational history of the area. One of the boreholes was selected for further study and two radiocarbon samples from the base and top of the organic sequence in the core was submitted for radiocarbon dating. The results indicate that organic sediments above the gravels date to perhaps less than a hundred years in the 7th century AD. This is consistent with finds of saxon pottery in the dposits above (see PRN 64193) and indicates that the palaeoenvironmental evodence contained within these deposits is contemporary with Saxon settlement evidence from nearby Quarrington (PRN 60487) and Holdingham (PRN 64180).{1}{2}
