Full Description

PRN 23983 Excavation at the Wygate Park site revealed the edges of a 2nd-3rd century AD Romano-British settlement which is likely to extend to the south and west, and which may be related to the settlement activity to the north (PRN 23835). The settlement includes posthole structures and a complex of enclosures including ladder type enclosures likely used for arable farming. A large well or water hole was also present. This feature does not appear to have been used by animals as there was no sign of trampling. Evidence of metal working was found, including a possible iron smithy and crucibles used for copper working. Pottery from the site was predominantly local in origin, mainly Nene Valley, although some imported wares, including Samian and a single amphora sherd, were found. {1}{2}
