Full Description
Church. Nave and aisles 1869-71, chancel 1879, tower and spire 1884-87. By James Fowler of Louth. Paid for largely by the Shuttleworth family. Rockfaced ashlar with ashlar dressings and slate roofs. Early English style. PLAN: west tower with spire, nave with clerestory, north and south aisles, north and south porches, chancel and vestry. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}
Won in competition in 1868 by James Fowler, and without doubt his most impressive church. It was built in three stages, nave and aisles 1869-71, chancel 1879-80, and tower and spire to a modified and more lavish design 1884-7. Thus a large and expensive church, its spire, seen at some angles competing with the cathedral. The style is also that of the cathedral. For example, the bell stage of the tower has the trellis decoration of the cathedral work of c.1240 and the windows with tracery of c.1300, except for the south clerestory. A Roman altar, found on site, is on display. {2}
The construction and architecture of this church have been extensively discussed. {3}{4}{5}{6}
