Full Description

Swing bridge for the docks, constructed in 1882 to 1884 by Handysides, the Derby Ironfounders. It is made of prefabricated segmental panelled iron sides with a central circular pier set on a timber piled platform and is hydraulically opened from the octagonal control cabin on the west bank with manual control in the centre. The bridge was constructed to link the docks single track railway with the Great Nothern Line. The gatehouse and signals cabin dates from 1884 and is constructed of red brick with blue brick dressings and has a slate roof with blue angle raised ridges and a terracotta pinnacle to a pyramid roof. This gatehouse and cabin controls the Swing Bridge. Both the gatehouse and the bridge itself are listed buildings designated in two separate listings, for the full descriptions and the legal addresses of these listed buildings please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} It was originally manually controlled but was converted to electricity in 1981. {2}
