Full Description

A small coin hoard dating to the 4th century AD was discovered during metal detecting near the Fiskerton causeway site. The coins consist of 49 copper-alloy nummi, the majority of which are one of two reverese types dated to either AD335-41 or AD343-48. Two coins of Helena were also included, and the latest date comes from a nummi of Constans indicating that the hoard must have been deposited sometime after AD348. It is possible that the hoard may be a votive deposit, though given the low value of the coins it may represent a casual loss. It is also possible that the full extent of the hoard was not recovered during this survey. Fieldwalking carried out at the same time recovered Roman pottery sherds and tile fragments scattered across the full extent of the survey. These finds are consistent with a normal domestic assemblage and range from 2nd to 4th century AD. {1}
