Archaeological evaluation at the proposed site of East Banks Car Park, Boston Road, Sleaford revealed at least four phases of Romano-British remains including a trackway, ditches, postholes and pits. The first phase included a boundary ditch containing pottery dated to the early to mid third century. Phase two of activity, mid to late third century, comprised a ditch system and a series of postholes. Phase three comprised a wall, trackway and ditch system dated to the late third century. The presence of a trackway so close to a river suggests that there could have been a crossing point to the opposite bank within the area of the site. The fourth phase comprised a series of ditches aligned north to south, which appear to use the trackway as a boundary. A large pit can also be attributed to this final phase. All of the Romano British phases, which produced animal bone and environmental data, suggest that the activity on site was agricultural and domestic in nature. The 3rd century date of the features suggests that the site is part of the late expansion of Old Sleaford.{1}{2}
Further features of 1st - 3rd century date were encountered during a watching brief at this site. The features include pits, ditches (probably boundary or drainage related) and a metalled surface. Pottery (kitchen and table wares) and a modest assemblage of animal bones (typical of butchery waste) were recovered. {3}{4}
Roman pottery was recovered from a garden of Boston Road (at approx. TF 0725 4572). It included one amphora rim and a body sherd. Undated foundations (PRN 60882) were also reported. {5}
Roman pottery including an almost complete black burnished storage jar was found at Boston Road at TF 0727 4574. Part of a bone awl was also found. {6}
Roman building foundations were observed during the construction of an air raid shelter in c.1940 at approx. TF 0709 4571. Their Roman origin was determined by the discovery of Roman coins embedded in the mortar between the buried brickwork. One of the coins depicts a wolf suckling the twins. {5}
Also a coin of Constantius II was found in a garden in New Street, at TF 0710 4569. {6}
A face vase, about 2/3 complete after restoration, and fragments of another larger face vase were found during work near the swimming baths (no grid reference given). {7}
Two stamped amphora sherds were also found at the same site. {7}{8}
