Full Description

PRN 70475 An archaeological watching brief was maintained during groundworks at Lincoln Minster School, Upper Lindum Street, Lincoln. The watching brief identified a single pit which was cut into the natural limestone brash. Measuring 2.1m wide by 2.4m deep, its fill produced twelve sherds of Roman pottery dating to the late 1st to early 2nd century AD. The assemblage included Legionary-type fabrics such as early Roman red-slipped ware and Pink Micaceous ware, together with Iron Age tradition gritty and shell tempered fabrics. A single amphora sherd was also found, along with a small quantity of animal bone. Six sherds of mid to late 2nd century pottery were recovered from a c.1.8m thick layer which could represent the backfill of an otherwise unidentified quarry or ground raising material associated with the terracing of the hill-slop at this point. A rim sherd of a 1st to 2nd century Roman glass bottle (or jar) was also retrieved from a 19th century deposit.{1}{2}
