Full Description

A disused anti-aircraft battery identified on aerial photography by the National Mapping Programme. {1} This heavy anti-aircraft battery dates to the Second World War, and probably once formed part of the defences of the nearby Spitalgate RAF airfield (see PRN 34958). {2} The buildings were visited in 2012, and were found to be in relatively good condition, although tree growth and rabbit acitivity were beginning to have an impact. {3} A George VI penny of 1938 was recovered immediately adjacent to the former gun emplacement, during monitoring works for the installation of a new water pipeline between Harrowby and Easton. The coin had a deep indentation, likely caused by a bullet and indicating that the coin may have been used for target practice. {4}{5}
