Full Description

The name of Saltfleetby St Clement is first recorded as Saltflatebi in 1086, which means the farmstead, village on or near Saltfleet. The affixes are from the dedications of the churches. It is also known as East Saltfleetby. {1} In 1086, there was no definition between the three Saltfleetby parishes and they were all listed as one. The King owned the majority of land, with further land being owned by the Bishop of Durham and Alfred of Lincoln. There was additional land owned by Rainer de Brimou and William Blund, but it is listed as waste. There is a minimum population of 53 people. By the Lindsey survey of 1115 the Count of Brittany had become the major landowner in the parish. {2} The lay subsidy in 1334 records that Saltfleetby paid £7 6s 6d which was considerably higher than the average for Louthesk wapentake, implying that the parish was wealthier than the average. {3} There was a fair granted to Saltfleetby in 1268 to be held from the 20th to 27th September. This was probably moved to Skidbrooke in 1301. By 1377, there were 320 taxpayers in the Saltfleetby. {4} By 1563, there were 13 households in Saltfleetby St Clement. {5} In the early 18th century the population was between 13 and 19 families, with one Anabaptist family. {6} The population was 114 in 1801, rising to 154 in 1871 and falling again to 99 in 1901. {7} Cropmarks were observed on aerial photographs as part of the national mapping programme. These were interpreted as medieval tofts (PRN 46305a - TF 4599 9206, PRN 46305b - TF 4575 9176, and PRN 46305c - TF 4671 9152), and a medieval building platform (PRN 46305d - TF 4592 9188). {8} Two distinct areas of medieval ridge and furrow were recorded in December 2013, during an earthwork survey, conducted in the field surrounding Pear Tree Farm, Mar Dyke East, Saltfleetby St Clement (PRN 46305e - TF 4610 9224). The ridge and furrow was discernible as two adjacent areas of linear earthworks, both aligned on a north-west to south-east axis, and separated by a deeper furrow, thought to represent a boundary ditch. This ditch serves to divide the area into two discrete fields. {9}{10}
