Full Description
A site visit was made in to a large area of land that had been machine excavated in the vicinity of a former field dyke, now filled in. The landowners had reported that when the dyke was open many years previously, pottery had been recovered. The present excavation produced large quantities of Romano-British pottery, oyster shell and moderate amounts of bone. It appears that during the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, a creek flowed through the area, into which a large quantity of rubbish was deposited over a period of at least a hundred years. The nature of the pottery assemblage suggests that it originates from a high status site and/or a site which had close connections with continental trade. The lack of building material and and the large size and freshness of the sherds indicate a primary rubbish or midden deposit that must have originated from a settlement or household in the immediate vicinity of the creek. A single ditch cut in the western bank of the creek was the only evidence of an artificially created feature. {1}
