Full Description

Earthworks of medieval ridge and furrow, to the north of Saltfleetby St Peter. Identified on aerial photography examined as part of the National Mapping Programme. {1} Traces of the ridge and furrow were recorded in June 2009, during archaeological monitoring of the construction of a new waste water treatment plant on land to the north-west of Saltfleetby St Peter. The recorded area coincided with the smaller, south-western block of earthworks previously identified on the aerial photographs examined by the NMP. Seven north-west to south-east aligned furrows were recorded in this area, with each furrow measuring 2.5m wide. A small quantity of redeposited medieval to early post-medieval pottery was also recovered, with the assemblage comprising sherds of Lincoln Glazed ware, Potterhanworth ware, Toynton wares and Bourne ware, ranging from the 12th to mid 17th centuries in date. {2}{3}
