Full Description
Cropmarks of several probable enclosures of unknown date, to the south of Candlesby. Visible as the fragmentary remains of at least three conjoined rectilinear enclosures, measuring 20m by 10m on average. Identified on aerial photography examined as part of the National Mapping Programme. {1}
Two churches are recorded as being at Candlesby at the time of the Domesday survey. The site of one of these churches is known, with the current Church of St Benedict being built in 1838 on the site of an earlier medieval church (see MLI93594). The site of the second church is unknown, although there has been some speculation that it may have been in this location, to the south of Candlesby. The foundations of an old wall were noted in this area during mid 20th century deep ploughing, with a large amount of chalk rubble, unglazed pottery and bone fragments being noted in the plough soil to the west. It was thought that some of the bone fragments were human, and could indicate a burial ground in this general area. It might be that the previous findings of other human remains and artefacts (see MLI42184), and cropmarks of enclosures (see MLI97706) to the west of this location could indicate a possible focus of earlier settlement activity in this wider area. {2}{3}
