Full Description

An archaeological watching brief on land at 122 Ermine Street, Ancaster identified two features dating to the late Romano-British period. A large rubbish pit, approximately 1.2m in diameter, contained a small assemblage of 3rd century pottery and a sliver coin. A linear feature approximately 2m north of the pit contained a single sherd of 3rd century pottery. Although unexcavated, the feature is thought to be a boundary ditch belonging to the late Romano-British period. {1}{2} A deposit of likely late Roman date was recorded in March 2012, during the monitoring of groundworks for a new electrical cable in Ancaster. The deposit was recorded from the immediate north of the railway bridge, down to around 106 Ermine Street. An assemblage of 4th century Roman material was recovered from the layer, with further unstratified late Roman pottery being recovered from the overlying modern layers of road build up material. {3}{4}
