Full Description
A piece of lead which bears the impressions of dies for striking imitations of solidi of Louis the Pious (814-840) found at Torksey but the exact findspot is not recorded. Numbers of these imitative gold solidi have been found in Frisia and they may have been minted in England. A trial striking of the dies would provide good evidence for local production. Imitative solidi are generally thought to be of mid ninth century date.{1}
