Full Description
PRN 63708
An archaeological watching brief and subsequent excavation along the route of the Silk Willoughby to Staythorpe gas pipeline indentified a small isolated pit. The pit contained three bags of fired clay of indeterminate date. Some of the pieces of fired clay are part of blocks and also have firing holes piercing their surface. It is likely that the material came from a kiln, taking the form of a kiln lining, support bars, plates or flooring. The pieces are likely to have been used in some sort of industrial firing purposes, though it is uncertain what without evidence of any product. The feature suggests the presence of an unlocated kiln in the immediate vicinity (see PRN 63707).{1}{2}
