Full Description

63601 The settlement of Garwick or 'Gerewic' is first documented in the late thirteenth century. The first element may be the Old English personal name 'Gaera', and the second in one of its senses means 'a dwelling, a specialised building, a farm, a dairy farm'. {1} The field centred at TF 1780 4425 (PRN 63601a) is the only one in the area which is not arable, and contains slight earthworks. It is suggested that these represent field drainage. {2}{3} Fields before Enclosure in Heckington were known as Garwick Field, Garwick North Meadow and Garwick South Meadow. Old enclosures show possible settlement at the place currently indicated as Garwick (PRN 63601b - TF 1783 4439). {4}
