Full Description

PRN 63640 153 trial trenches were excavated on the proposed route of the Lincoln Eastern Bypass. A pit containing burnt limestone was uncovered; this was interpreted as a lime kiln. A gully, which appeared to have been a flue, was also uncovered. As there is no local outcrop of limestone nearby, it is suggested that the limekilns were built at this location to exploit the decaying remains of either the Roman farmstead or the Medieval Sheepwash Grange. {1}{2} A geophysical survey was undertaken in 2006 along the proposed route of the Lincoln Eastern Bypass (Route B). A circular anomaly was identified at this location which may be related to the limekilns identified in the trial trenching program undertaken in 2004. {3}
